I thought I'd start the week with another prep' sketch/final painting combo. This is a piece I painted a while back called 'Hydrogen & Oxygen'. This is the initial drawing I did in oil pastels:
While I was very pleased with this quite simple sketch, as I thought I'd really captured my mood on the paper, when I decided to do an actual painting from it, I decided to make the colours a lot warmer. I just wanted to see if I could convey the feeling of real heat. It was painted entirely in acrylics; I hope you can discern the three-dimensional textural effects from this photograph:

This is a painting that seems to divide people: some people say it reminds them of 'Apocalypse Now' and some people say it reminds them of 'The Lion King'. Believe it or not, I wasn't actually thinking of either of them when I was painting it. The first time I watched my 'Lion King' DVD after I painted it I did have a small forehead slapping moment, though... (Just to pre-empt the comment: I don't own 'Apocalypse Now'. I'm more your 'Full Metal Jacket' kinda guy.)

You should own Apocalypse Now. Without getting into the comparisons game, it's just one of the essential Hollywood Vietnam movies. The last sequence drags on a bit mind you. ;)
The whole darn movie drags, in my opinion, and more than just a bit. I know it's cinematic blasphemy, but I'm really not a fan of 'Apocalypse Now'. It's far too long and takes itself far too seriously.
There is a lot in your statement that I have no choice but agree with. But it was the first of my own Vietnam movie experiences, and it takes a look at the whole dirty business which you just don't see in even the best of the more conventional treatments, eg. Platoon or Full Metal Jacket. ;)
I prefer Full Metal Jacket, but I do love Apocalypse Now too. Two great movies, by two great directors, tackling the same subject in two totally different ways.
I don't, however, care that much for Platoon.
But I *do* love me some Heartbreak Ridge.
I just knew this post would spark a conversation about cinema. I also had a feeling it wouldn't be about 'The Lion King'.
It's a cutesified "Hamlet". The end.
