From the vault: Refraction

I'm still up to my eyeballs in dots today, folks, and not really at a stage where it would be worth posting another 'work-in-progress' photograph, as there wouldn't be much more to say that would be any different to yesterday's post. Not to leave you hanging with nothing while I crack on with the dots, I thought I'd post another image from the vault. I actually had a request to see the painting below on my website from somebody (you know who you are) who saw it when it was a work in progress a year or so ago but never saw the finished piece.
It's called 'Refraction' (if you don't spot it right away, look closely at the penlight in the guy's hand for why) and it's something of an oddity for me as I painted it on a big chunk of wood (rather than canvas, which is more usual for me) with a combination of both acrylic paint and emulsion. That's the same type of emulsion paint you'd use to paint your living room walls, in case you were thinking there's a special artist's kind of emulsion that you hadn't heard of. Mixing the emulsion with the acrylic gave a rather strange consistency of paint that was pretty hard to work with, and I had to use a combination of palette knives and big, thick brushes to apply the paint as smaller brushes just weren't strong enough to manipulate the thick paint, but I think the end result justified the extra sweat and cursing. I hope you like it.

Never seen that one before. Really like it, though.
